6 important facts to consider before buying an electric blanket

If you need extra warmth (and don’t feel like turning on the heater) on frosty winter evenings, an electric heated blanket may be a great help. However, before you buy it, there are a few considerations and safety precautions you should be aware of. Here’s a way to be sure you have the coolest (and most secure) electric blanket you can buy.

  1. The fabric can be comfortable and safe at the same time.

Electric heated blankets are usually done with microfiber polyester or wool. But don’t be discouraged by the term polyester; these kinds of blankets are often wonderfully soft and cozy. You can sometimes get them made of acrylic (which is not as soft to the touch) or of cotton (which is a lot easier to burn), and polyester remains the best option.

  1. Considering the temperature setting options.

Some blankets also come with a variety of heat settings, allowing you to control the heat to your personal preference. Some of them even feature dual heat with twin remotes designed to be used by you and by your sleeping companion.

  1. Never forget to get enough long cordon.

Cords may vary; make absolutely certain you purchase a blanket with a sufficiently long cordon to reach your bed when plugged in.
  1. Know how to safely use it.

When using an electric heated blanket, make sure it is always laid flat (never crumple or fold it) to prevent excessive accumulation of heat. You must never put anything on it, i.e. neither you, nor another blanket, nor any other object such as a cushion or a book. This can retain the heat and may damage the heating coils inside the blanket. Never keep the blanket in place when not in use. Choose instead a blanket with an automatic shut-off system in the event that you forget it.
  1. You Can ( and will have to!) wash your electric blankets.

Although « electric » usually means « keep out of water », many electrical blankets are washable in a washing machine to make them easy to maintain. Be careful to follow the instructions on the care label and remove the power cord, the remote controls and any other accessories. Double-check the product package to determine whether the blanket is machine washable before you purchase it.

  1. Know the life span of the electric blanket

An electric blanket may last up to 10 years, if it is properly maintained and used. Should you notice that the heat is not evenly spread or if the blanket is bleached in some parts (a sign of internal burns), consider buying a new one.
